Tales of the Fox Spirit
During the Republic of China era, a hunter named Sun from Hu Village made a living by killing foxes and selling their fur. He died a brutal death in the mountains — his body covered in scratches and bite marks. After seeing her husband's corpse, his wife lost her mind. She screamed that the fox spirit would bring retribution on anyone who offended it, then fled into the mountains and took shelter at the Fox Spirit Temple. The villagers believed it was the fox spirit's revenge, and from then on, they stayed far away from white foxes and the temple. The protagonist Zhang Huaiyuan lost his parents at a young age and lived with his uncle Zhang Ercheng and his aunt. His uncle treated him like a son, but his aunt was greedy and resentful about having to support him. Years ago, Zhang Huaiyuan and his uncle were saved from a wolf pack by a white fox. Grateful, they swore never to hunt foxes again. But then Shopkeeper Liu from the city fur shop came along. He wanted pure white fox fur to make coats. He tempted Zhang Ercheng with an offer of three thousand silver dollars to capture the spiritual white fox living near the Fox Spirit Temple. Blinded by greed, the aunt forced her husband and nephew to go into the mountains. Despite his fear, Zhang Ercheng had no choice but to obey. They set traps and accidentally caught a young white fox. Soon after, strange things started happening at the Zhang home. Their livestock were killed overnight. The white fox appeared in their dreams. A mysterious woman in white knocked at their door in the middle of the night, demanding the cub back. Then, the worst came — hundreds of foxes surrounded their house, scratching at the doors and walls. Terrified, Zhang Ercheng and Zhang Huaiyuan decided to return the cub to the temple to end the nightmare.
