The Buried Truth
Wang Yang accumulated hundreds of thousands in debt from gambling and was being pursued by loan sharks. To claim a one-million-yuan insurance payout, he concealed the truth of his mother’s accidental death. He feared that his sister would blame him for failing to care for their mother properly. With his mother’s birthday just three days away—the day the insurance policy would mature—Wang Yang saw an opportunity to pay off his debts and decided to hide the truth. When his sister, Wang Xue, returned to visit their mother, he repeatedly made excuses to prevent her from discovering their mother’s body. He also went to great lengths to hide the truth from their neighbor, Aunt Huang, who came looking for his mother. Though guilt-ridden, Wang Yang feared that failing to repay the loans would lead to the seizure of his home and bring harm to his wife. Tormented but desperate, he continued deceiving his sister and her husband. Eventually, Wang Xue’s husband, Zhao Wei, uncovered the truth and confronted Wang Yang, accusing him of heartlessness. He pointed out that their mother had never enjoyed a comfortable life because of Wang Yang, and now, even in death, he was using her to scam money. Wang Yang felt deep remorse, but with the situation already spiraling, Zhao Wei—worried that the shock might worsen Wang Xue’s heart condition—reluctantly agreed to help conceal the truth for the time being. Noticing strange behavior from both Wang Yang and Zhao Wei, Wang Xue grew suspicious and pressed for answers. In response, Wang Yang, Zhao Wei, and Wang Yang’s wife, Zhang Na, put on an act to ease her doubts. However, the truth eventually came to light. Wang Xue, heartbroken, tearfully confronted her brother, demanding to know why he had hidden their mother’s death and how he could have been so careless as to cause her accidental passing. Just then, the loan sharks showed up, demanding immediate repayment. In a panic, Wang Yang tried to claim the insurance money, only to learn that the policy could be redeemed once the term ended, regardless of whether his mother was alive or not. Overwhelmed with regret and shock, he fainted. When he awoke, he realized it had all been a dream. This story serves as a reminder to cherish and care for our parents while we still can, rather than waiting until it’s too late and living with lifelong regret.
